mālama i ka ā€˜Änia (to respect and care for the land)

Surreal moments. I booked this months in advance to set a deadline to be moved out of Taos and have myself placed on the West Coast by the end of January. It was a dirt cheap round trip ticket out of San Diego. An inexpensive ā€œsuppliers choiceā€ car rental. The gal upgraded me to an SUV because I’m a respectful and nice lad… and the customer ahead of me was an unpleasant Gen Z that used curse words because she didn’t get her way. She was asked to go elsewhere. It pays to be kind folks. Food is expensive but they sell Poke /poʊkeÉŖ/ by the pound in the grocery store… and I could eat Spicy Ahi Poke every single day for the rest of my life.

Hilo, HI showed up in my Astro-Cartography chart as the top place on this planet for me to obtain beneficial life experiences (Taos was #2šŸ¤”). Ask me about my chart stories sometime… it’s in the charts that we need less charts.

I was ambivalent about coming here… it seemed very Central America when I first arrived and I questioned my decision in lieu of going back to Latin America. It didn’t take long to see and feel how special this place is…

One long hike over and through the lava field on the east side of the island. It was 85° and I wear all black things to match the lava and cuz I’m totally goth when I travel. Cool stuff but my chilly New Mexico feet were tender but the time I hit the black sand beach. I was in the water for less than 30 seconds when a giant wave hit… throwing sharp lava rocks on my legs and feet… and nearly washed my shoes and pack in that I thought I had far enough up the shore. I had cuts on my foot when I came out and was feeling like I got my ass kicked in short order in peaceful Hawaii. Lesson One: Be cool to the volcano gods. Be cool to the people. Be cool to the lands. Just be cool.

There’s whales, and sea turtles and colorful birds… and I looooove hearing the Hawaiian language. I think I need a motorcyle to round off my experience.

I have a return ticket to San Diego… but Poke… by the pound… swoon.
