“You'll never untangle the circumstances that brought you to this moment…” -Leonard Cohen

I freely open my mind to allow the wind to take me… to far off corners. And there is a moment… a conscious mindful moment of awareness… of… how did I get to this place?

And one of those moments… a foggy morning… I was watching the steam rise from a glass kettle sitting on the table before me, looking out the window of a third story window of a Hayes Vally Victorian apartment in San Francisco. Post conscious clarity from a psychedelic experience induced by a clinical dose of ketamine from the night before. It was an intense trip. And as I stare out at the skyscape… a pinpoint thought of… how did I get to this place.

Another… in the mountain jungles of Zunil Guatemala, 50 minutes from Quetzaltenango… a post hot springs soak at Aguas Amargas. It’s dusk and my rental car is blocked in and I’m surrounded by indigenous mountain people… and that moment… of conscious alertness of my location… and no one knows where I’m at.

Again… I walk out of my sublet apartment… 210 Orizaba in Roma Norte, Mexico City… Willam Burroughs and Jack Kerouac lived there in the mid 1950s. I have a copy of “Mexico City Blues,” which Kerouac penned at this location. And as I exit through the principle gate of the complex… there parked is my American car… that I drove down with my Mexican compañera from San Francisco, and a rush of mindful reality. How did I arrive at this place?

I have had many of these flash realities… and again… this night… in San Martin de las Pirámides… a back street… late into the darkness of the night… buying a cigarette and chelas with my local compañera, who does not speak English, watching the faces of the locals drive/ride by me standing on the curb… with looks like, “what… and how did you get to this spot?” And it’s a lightning bolt of clear and distinct emotional thought… “I am a long ways from where I began…”
