I have been told by many people… not to go to Tepito without out a local. They’ll take your shoes. Well… I don’t have one of those today… so… I’ll just be quick… buscando algo para mi fiesta. Leave my phone in my pocket… no fotos… don’t linger… don’t make eye contact… put a billete de quinientos in the side pocket… walk with purpose.

And yay! There’s the police… the crooked paid off police… 🫤 I must say… I felt a little overwhelmed in a few different moments. I’m in a little too deep… I would have questioned my decision to be a solo güerito in Tepito… (that would be a good song title) but… I know… you’re a goldfish in a shark tank… you just keep moving until you make it to the other end.

I made it out alive… with my shoes. Now over to Tianguis La Lagunilla. There’s a ton of cool stuff… everything you could want. I’d love to buy a vintage chair and other cool items… but I’ll be on a plane to Texas in one week. I don’t need bulky things and then need to get yet another bodega. I ended buying the same shit I always buy…cool leather arm cuffs, stickers, patches, and shiny things to put on my travel mochila.

I met Arturo… he was the leather artist. We had a nice conversation in Spanish. He asked a bunch of questions… “I’m a watercolor artist and writer… but I’d like to do some tattoo work in Mexico…” for some reason… he went into a long rant about the climate and the hot temperatures here… a loooong rant. I nodded and agreed… despite not really agreeing. Treinta grados is not really that hot. It will be 36°C in Tolantongo tomorrow… that’s hot. 🥵

I did not have a local escort to Tepito or La Lagunilla baby!!!! but I’m meeting with my cuate, Maria de Angeles in San Angel for snacks and plan making for a final adventure this week.
